Mariana P. Monteiro (MD, PhD) is a medical doctor dedicated to clinical practice, teaching and academic research.

Graduated Faculty of Medicine (FMUP) at the University of Porto in 1996, became specialist in Endocrinology in 2005, after concluding the postgraduate medical training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Santo António Hospital in Porto. In 2003, embarked on a clinical fellowship funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation at Metabolic Medicine - Imperial College London and completed a PhD in Medicine in 2007 at UPorto. In the same year, joined the ICBAS-UP faculty as Lecturer/Assistant Professor, became Reader/Associate Professor in 2011 and Full Professor in 2023.

Throughout her career, held several clinical positions, that included being Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London (from 2006- to 2011), Consultant in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Obesity Physician for Bariatric Services at Hospital de São Sebastião (from 2009- to 2013) and Honorary Consultant thereafter. Additionally, served as Consultant in Endocrinology and Obesity Physician at University College London Hospitals from 2016 to 2017.

Currently, holds several key roles at UP, including being UMIB General Coordinator since 2013, member of the Executive Board of the Associated Laboratory Integrated and Translational Research since 2021, President of the ISPUP Scientific Board of the Institute of Public Health of @UPorto), Director of the Scientific Board of the Doctoral Degree in Medical Sciences at ICBAS, and member of the Pedagogical and Scientific Councils both at ICBAS. Concurrently, is engaged in clinical practice and research at Hospital da Luz (Porto), where established a branch of the institutional Clinical Trials Unit (headquarters in Lisbon). Her research is focused on Diabetes and Obesity in a translational perspective, leading an interdisciplinary working group that uses a variety of molecular and clinical approaches, to understand how energy and glucose homeostasis are regulated.
